HTTP://FIERTH.COM – Scientology operates more as a business than as a church, relying on techniques perfected by car salesmen to attract new members and celebrities to its rolls. That’s just one of the takeaways from Janet Reitman’s controversial book about the world’s most controversial and secretive religion. “Inside Scientology” chronicles L. Ron Hubbard’s creation of Scientology six decades ago and traces its development into the faith of choice for movie stars such as John Travolta and Tom Cruise.

Secret cinema found beneath Paris
In September 2004, French police discovered a hidden chamber in the catacombs under Paris. It contained a full-sized movie screen, projection equipment, a bar, a pressure cooker for making couscous, a professionally installed electricity system, and at least three phone lines. Movies ranged from 1950s noir classics to recent thrillers.
When the police returned three days later, the phone and power lines had been cut and there was a note on the floor: “Do not try to find us.”

Happy Birthday Keith Haring!
I don’t think art is propaganda; it should be something that liberates the soul, provokes the imagination and encourages people to go further. It celebrates humanity instead of manipulating it.

The following 60 posts on my tumblr today were almost all taken within the lonely confines of an SRO crack hotel I was living in after developinging full blown AIDS and getting so sick that I qualified for HASA, basically welfare for people with the plague. I had just started taking pictures again and was trying desperately to get my life in order. My addiction was out of control and I had recently been mugged in a black-out and thrown head first into the Hudson river where I floated for almost two hours before finding a way out. Everything in my life was spinning out of control and the only thing that gave me even a glimmer of hope was my Sony Mavica digital camera which actually used floppy discs for film. I had just started seriously taking photographs again and that hotel room in Harlem was where I obsessively started what would later ammount to over 5000 self portraits. I was also making the first of many extremely X-rated collages, incorporating every type of porn possible mixed with reconfigured NY Post headlines and Vogue fashion images. They would do random room checks at the hotel and upon discovering three of my walls covered in sublimely ridiculous smut, proceeded to rip it all down and reprimand me for making art even though I was keeping to myself and not wandering the halls in search of a bump like the other residents. Unable to deal with being censored, I proceeded to collage the entire room from floor to wall to ceiling in the most explicit ass & cock images imagineable. With the thickest black Sharpie I could find, I wrote “HAVING AIDS IS ENOUGH OF A PRISON. I REFUSE TO LET YOU PUT ME IN YET ANOTHER CELL. GO FUCK YOURSELF, BUT HAVE A NICE DAY!” and promptly moved out, having no idea of what was to come, where I was going or how I was to live. It didn’t matter. I had no idea that six years later I would be showing my photographs in galleries or having my book published. All I had at that point was my camera, my newly revived health, my imagination and a huge set of balls that masqueraded my fear with fierceness, my cray-cray with correctness. It seems like I’m always starting my life over, pressing re-start and refreshing whatever state I may find myself in. The only thing I can be sure of is that it will never be boring or banal, but always risk filled, random & real. I very recently put myself in the unfortunate position of alienating, insulting and basically being a complete troll to two of my dearest & best friends because of my inability to stay away from someone toxic in my life which caused me to majorly fall off that damn wagon and do a bunch of crazy shit in a black-out. They may be gone from my life forever and deservedly so. All I can do is try and get back up on that proverbial horse and be the best dude possible. Like I always say, cum correct or don’t cum at all.Photograph by Walt Cessna NYC 07
