Crazy and Cool Habits of Celebrities
A Fierth Op-Ed

There are a lot of reasons that celebrities and famous people get the attention that they do and seriously? Only a tiny fraction of that attention is because they do truly good work. That doesn’t mean that there isn’t some serious talent out there, of course. It just means that, the majority of the time the attention we give to the glitterati is because they act crazy, pull some sort of crazy stunt, have weird pets, weird fetishes, weird relationships and, of course, wild and crazy hobbies.

Trust us when we tell you that knitting would not have become the main stream DiY Shabby Chic trendy hobby that it is now if someone hadn’t spotted a celebrity doing it. That hobby was destined to stay “an old lady thing” for good. Now look at it!

So if celebrities brought back knitting and helped along the yoga craze (yeah, Madonna, we’re looking at you)—we started wondering: what other crazy hobbies have or are destined to become completely common simply because a celebrity likes it?

Painting

Ricky Gervais went on the record as someone who loves to paint when he wants to unwind. Former President George W Bush has been very open about how much he’s gotten into painting (if the things he’s showcased are actually his, he’s actually pretty good at it). A century ago it was just as common to see people painting as it is now to see them taking selfies. Part of the reason painting has slipped out of popularity is because photography took over for it but if Gervais and Bush are into it, it’s only a matter of time before people of all stripes are setting up their canvasses and having a dabble.

Board Games and Other Assorted Geekerie

Gaming, particularly board gaming, has come a long way since you were a kid. The days of choosing between Monopoly, Sorry and the Game of Life are long over. Now there are hundreds (thousands) of different card and board games to choose from and celebrities from every genre are admitting to enjoying a turn now and then. Quentin Tarantino collects old school board games that are based on old television shows. There’s even a YouTube show called TableTop that features—you guessed it—celebrities playing board games.

Speaking of games, did you know that Mila Kunis loves World of Warcraft and Vin Diesel is a huge fan of Dungeons and Dragons (and even got Judy Dench hooked on it)? Expect those games to lose their geek outcast sheen pretty soon too!

It isn’t just games that are being adopted by celebrity culture. Many things often associated with geeks and nerds are now becoming chic (just look at San Diego Comic Con). Leonardo DiCaprio collects action figures. Ben Stiller is a Trekkie. Simon Cowell loves cartoons. Seth Green…well that’s pretty obvious.

Flying

This is a great example of another celebrity hobby that is being adopted by the civilian population. Twenty years ago, the idea of any old schmoe taking to the skies was absurd. Pilots had the same prestige as astronauts. Then celebrities started getting into it, making headlines about flying themselves to location shoots instead of driving with other cast members or living on location and now—with the right training of course—anybody can get a pilot’s license. There are even stores like PilotMall that cater to the budget flyer.

It’s true that Angelina Jolie collects daggers and Johnny Depp likes playing with Barbie Dolls but when it comes to things that the non-abundantly-wealthy can adopt. Look to the skies, look in your basements and check your local parks. You’ll be seeing a lot more of the things we mentioned here!
