In the 1980s Fire Island Pines and Cherry Grove were THE gay mecca of the Northeast US (along with Provincetown, MA). It was a vibrant time in contrast with the AIDS epidemic. Here is a montage of footage from the Cherry Grove Historical Archives.    The spirit of these men still carries on in the Pines and the grove , and some remarkable similarities to what our summer memories consist of can be seen here.
