BREAKDOWN w/ THE KIKI TWINS: UNDERCOVER
What do you do: Disco & House Music All Night Long
Where are you based: Brooklyn, NY
1. So tell us, what is the most FIERTH thing about you?
JOE: My musical partner in crime He’s fierth!
GREG: Oh great, make me look like the dick. I was gonna say my weave collection.
2. What type of art do you create?
We make dance music, and with Undercover, we’re trying to create a downtown dance vibe with nods to NYC disco, house and pop from the 80s and 90s. Although we love disco and house, we like our songs to follow a classic pop structure, with discernible verses, bridges and hopefully some catchy choruses.
3. What’s going on right now for you?
We’re excited to be making our live debut at The F Word at Splash on Friday, November 25th. We’re having a projection artist create some visuals for our number, and it’ll be great to debut at Formika and Mark Nelson’s party – they’ve always been very supportive, And since we released the music video for our first single, “You’re Turning Me On,” we’ve started work on the music video for our second single, “Your Loving Touch,” which will be released in December, with remixes from Sparber, John Rizzo, Austin Downey and DJ Nita. Oh, and while all this is going on, we’re rehearsing for Greg’s latest one man show, “Must Be The Music,” happening at Ars Nova on Friday, November 11th. The show recounts his love of disco and NYC nightlife, as told through comedic songs & sketches and features Joe, Maine Anders and DJ Bill Coleman. 4. What’s on your plate for the rest of 2011?
Over the winter, we plan on releasing our self-titled debut, with a small promotional tour to support it. We’ve also recorded a song with Jipsta for a record DJ Ranny is putting out called “Body Pop” that should be coming out soon. And at some point, the Remix EP for our third single, once we figure out what song it’s gonna be!
5. Who’s on your radar? Who should we be keeping an eye on?
GREG: I’ve been obsessed with Azari & III ever since I heard them on Tim Sweeney’s Beats In Space podcast a few years ago, and am looking forward to them releasing the remixes for “Manic” and “Into The Night” stateside so I can eat them up already!
JOE: I’m really into Medina these days – she’s a Danish singer who’s got a real smooth and sexy electro pop sound. I also love Goapele, a Bay Area R&B singer/songwriter who just released a new record.
GREG/JOE: And we both love Miguel Migs, and were thrilled to see he recruited Evelyn “Champagne” King for his latest single, “Everybody.” There’s a great dub out on Itunes now.
6. What is something no one knows about you?
No one really knows about us yet, so everything. Oh, and that Joe has a secret desire to be a country singer.
7. What are some of your pet peeves?
JOE: I don’t keep peeves as pets.
GREG: Over-tweeters. Girl, I don’t care that you just shit out a piece of corn!
8. If you could be anywhere right now doing anything with anyone, tell us where, what and with who it would be.
JOE: I’d be on the dance floor at Danceteria in 1983, experiencing a time in New York I never got the chance to.
GREG: I’d be having sex in the Mens Room at Danceteria in 1983, having sex with men I never got the chance to.
