Bette Midler : The Showgirl Must Go On
I was so excited to be asked to review Bette Midler’s new DVD. I draped myself in my favorite feather boa to prepare myself for diva moments and mixed myself a very strong dirty martini. At first I thought I made my martini a little too strong when I saw flying birds, cows and maybe even Bette herself getting swept up into a very long tornado opening credit sequence.
Thankfully after that the bawdy, bodacious and brilliant Bette landed on her feet center stage. The Divine Miss M gives it her all and more in her new DVD “The Showgirl Must Go Onâ€. A splashy taste of her run at The Colosseum at Caesar’s Palace. The DVD itself is edited down to sixty seven minutes from the show’s original running time of ninety minutes. There are some favorites like the Dolores Delago Disco Medley and When a Man Loves a Woman missing in action. After my second martini I wished they‘d left out the flying birds and given us more Bette. Though, this doesn’t take away from the fantastic performance Bette Midler and cast provide. The show is filled with the classic Midler mayhem numbers like the Pretty Legs/Hot in here medley and Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy to the delightful Do you Wanna Dance. My personal favorite from this show is Hello in There because it brings out the actress in Bette and brought out the tears in me. You won’t find any Cirque de Soleil Aerial artists in Bette’s show! You’ll get fabulous Vegas style dance numbers choreographed by Toni Basil. The DVD is a must see for Midler fans young and old that couldn’t catch the live performance! The showgirl in Bette came out and I’m sure glad she did!
