Over the last ten years, Manhattan-based photographer Michael Alago has developed and curated his own unique brand of “Rough Gods” photography. Instantly recognizable by fans the world over, Alago’s images pack a powerful, muscular, tattooed punch.

“Brutal Truth,” Alago’s provocative new 260-page book of photographs—the follow-up to his 2005 sold-out book “Rough Gods”—is out this April via sexy German publishing house Bruno Gmünder. In it friends, models and bodybuilders swagger before Alago’s lens to pose in various settings, stages of undress and arousal. Breathtakingly virile and often photographed in decayed urban settings, the solitary men of “Brutal Truth” radiate raw, in-your-face, roughneck machismo. Complimented by shots of urban grit, flowers and prefaced by one of Alago’s own poems, the effect is at once frankly visceral, sensual and quietly personal.

Passionate about music, art and literature, photographer Michael Alago is the quintessential New Yorker with an “only in New York” career. From booking bands at the legendary Eighties East Village rock club the Ritz (now Webster Hall) to famously signing metal gods Metallica and A&Ring Nina Simone’s final album to shooting some of the hottest roughnecks on the planet, Alago’s story is driven by creativity, instinct and guts.
