DON’T LET THESE WARM DAYS FOOL YOU
Spring may be upon us, but during the last few weeks of Winter, let’s not forget how to keep our skin soft and glowing as we appropach warmer weather. The changing of the seasons wreaks havok on the skin..and the hot/cold/hot atmosphere can cause dryness, oiliness, and blotchiness which is never the look for anyone. Follow these simple rules for flawless skin as we approch the season change:
SHOWERING: Shower only once per day, even if you go to the gym. The hot water, soap, and cold air excessively dry out your skin, so if you need to shower after the gym, make it your one shower of the day. In the shower, try to use a body wash that doesn’t contain sodium laureth sulfate, a harsh detergent cleanser that destroys the natural moisture barrier of your skin. (Try the Natural Body Wash for Men from BURTS BEES, which retails around $8). Using a loofah or exfoliating sponge will exfoliate to remove dead skin cells and further smooth dry, tired skin. After showering, apply a moisturizer withing 3 minutes to maximize absorbtion into the skin. Men should find an oil and petroleum free moisturizer such as the C.O. BIGELOW Men’s Ultra-Light Body Lotion (Available at Bath & Body Works for around $10).
FACE: Your face should be washed twice a day, as it produces more oil than the rest of the body using a mild exfoliating cleanser such ANTHONY Glycolic Facial Cleanser (Available at Sephora for around $20). Immediately after cleansing apply a generous amount of a GOOD QUALITY moisturizer. If you are going to spend money on any personal grooming product, this is where to do it, as a good moisturizer prevents oil buildup, eases the appearance of fine lines, and heals dry skin. I recommend the MALIN + GOETZ Vitamin E Moisturizer (Available at the Malin + Goetz Apothecary 7th Ave at 21st St for $45) which will last you about 3 months.
NIGHT TIME: Your regimen at night is the most important because your body repairs itself while you sleep. Even if you aren’t showering at night, you should wash your face and apply your moisturizer to the face and body. It is not necessary to use a separate night cream, though using a heavier moisturizer and body cream will definitely accelerate the healing process. Don’t forget to use a good quality cream on your hands and feet such as Look Ma, New Hands Lotion from BATH & BODY WORKS ($12), which contains parrafin wax to provide a protective barrier over the skin while you sleep.
DIET: Make sure to stay hydrated throughout the day and while you sleep. Ensuring that there is enough water in the body to saturate the skin is one of the keys to avoiding dry skin during the winter months. Keep a bottle of water on your bedside table to hydrate throughout the night as well, and you will find yourself surprised at how great you feel in the morning!
