The Fire Island Drag Invasion at Cherry Grove Ice Palace

By  |  0 Comments

It was the Summer of 1976 when a drag Queen named Terry Warren Panzi  was denied entry into a restaurant  in the Pines , at the time it was a more affluent and and convservative community than Cherry Grove.  When Warren’s friends in the Grove heard what had happened, they too dressed up in drag, and, on July 4, 1976, along  with Cherry Grove’s 1976 Homecoming Queen Thom Hansen (aka Panzi) in the lead, sailed to the Pines by water taxi. The boatload of drag queens that stormed into the Pines that day—to a surprised but exuberant welcome— it was the first “invasion,” an event now repeated each year.

The Invasion is gay Summertime holiday moment not to be missed . Be sure to kick off the event at the Ice Palace where the queens congregate for the voyage
