Remembering Nell Carter

Published on January 23, 2010 with No Comments

It was 7 years ago on this date that the world lost one of its brightest lights: Nell Carter.
Best known for her work on the cheesy 80′s sitcom ‘Gimme a Break!’, Carter was a star on Broadway, winning a Tony Award in 1978 for her sizzling turn in ‘Ain’t Misbehavin’, where her nasally but powerful voice and raw emotional palette were on full display.
Comedienne, singer, and actress Nell Carter was that rare thing- a heavyset African American woman standing only 4’11 who played by her own rules in show biz and triumphed. In her way, she paved the way for many people from Oprah Winfrey to Jennifer Hudson to Roseanne Barr. A true original!
